Position Announcement

College of Science is looking for a responsible, energetic person to join our wonderful advising team! Working under the direction of the College of Science Director of Academic Advising, advises prospective, new, continuing, and transfer students in all phases of university-wide academic programs, student development, and major planning. Manages a student caseload using predictive analytics, proactive outreach, and holistic advising to improve retention and degree completion. Establishes a relationship of respect, trust, and openness with students and the campus community. Duties include activities such as explaining policies, making referrals, maintaining records, and addressing academic standards issues.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Teaching/Planning: Counsel students in the development of meaningful educational plans compatible with their educational, career, and life goals. Advise students on academic requirements, course selection, and university policies. Provide guidance related to placement testing and transfer credit. Teach students, as needed, to use technology platforms required for degree planning and registration. Educate students on success strategies and support services provided by the university. Uphold policies, procedures, and priorities of departments and the institution, particularly those related to student degree completion. Consult with assigned academic department(s) regarding the development of graduation plans. Raise awareness of gaps in institutional resources and services for students.
  • Caseload Management: Manage and support a student caseload using holistic advising approaches, proactive outreach, and data-informed strategy. Maintain student advisement records. Within the framework of the student success platforms (Banner, DegreeWorks, Cadence, Civitas, etc.) audit student records for retention and graduation requirements. Assess student performance and progression toward graduation and refer students to appropriate support services as needed. Track progress toward key performance indicators.
  • Technology: Obtain proficiency and adapt to new technology, such as predictive analytics, student communication, records management, and degree progress tools. Monitor student risk trends over time, track data indicating student performance and progress toward graduation, and proactively reach out to students in need of intervention.
  • Certification/Professional Development: Achieve initial UVU advisor certification within one year of employment and maintain continued UVU advisor certification status as required. Adapt and apply current scholarship and related knowledge to advising practice and associated work activities. Remain current on department curriculum, degree related opportunities (internships, graduate school, careers, etc.), university policy, campus resources, and technology upgrades.
  • Additional Duties: Participate in department, division, and institutional goals and projects. Complete other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree plus one year of related experience totaling five years.

Preferred Qualifications:
College-level academic advising experience is preferred.
