The salary range for this position is $18.90 for Undergraduate III and is non-negotiable.
This Statement of Work encompasses the need for the student services to provide technical and/or analytical support in the fields of Marine Biology, Oceanography, Biology and Chemistry towards toxicity testing and chemistry analysis support of effluent and receiving water samples collected from a variety of Naval Bases such Naval Base Kitsap. The purpose of this task is to:
1) Provide laboratory support for toxicity and chemistry testing and analysis of water and sediment samples collected as part of the environmental monitoring programs and each site following appropriate EPA guidance.
2) To assist in the development of novel technologies and methodologies to improve the
environmental monitoring and each site.
3) To perform appropriate statistical analyses to interpret the data.
4) To produce reports to sponsors and relevant end users to summarize findings, interpret results, and follow required QA/QC procedures.
This work will support the regional direct environmental support that NIWC provides to the northwest Naval Bases, primarily Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton. These projects encompass a variety of tasking, including managing sites involvement in regional monitoring programs (e.g. Bight surveys, mussel watch, etc.), performing ambient and stormwater monitoring to better understand impacts and sites and assist sites in preparing for permit renewals processes, and incorporating NIWC developed/demonstrated technologies and methodologies to improve environmental monitoring at these sites.
These technologies include passive samplers, in-situ toxicity testing devices, and pulsed toxicity exposure testing. In combination, these improved technologies and methodologies more accurately characterize the impact of industrial discharges on the ambient environment. This work ensures the Navy meets its environmental stewardship goals, while minimizing impacts to the warfighter.
These tasks will be conducted in the Bioassay Laboratory at NIWC Pacific in San Diego, CA. The student(s) shall be involved in the preparation, performance and data analysis of laboratory-based toxicity testing, and with general laboratory maintenance.
Responsibilities
The Contractor shall assist in:
1)Conducting standardized and experimental laboratory based aquatic exposures on Navy-relevant seawater samples with passive sampling devices.
2) Performing data analysis using Microsoft Excel and appropriate statistical software.
3) Assisting with the development of lab exposure chambers using basic tools and parts/equipment that will be provided by the Government.
4) Maintaining laboratory facilities (e.g. washing glassware, calibration and maintenance of water quality meters and seawater system) and test organisms/cultures.
5) Conducting relevant literature searches pertaining to the studies and participating in report preparation. Submit Monthly Status Reports and Bi-Weekly Time Reports in accordance with the base contract.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate Student 3: Must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work. The student must be at the Senior level and have experience in 100% of the task requirements and be able to accomplish 90% of the work independently.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Expertise with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and common statistical software.
- Interest and/or experience with designing environmental sampling equipment.
- Desire person with strong work ethic, detail oriented, and good communication skills.
- Student available to work 20 hours per week preferred.
