Position Summary
The Department of Biology at the University of the Incarnate Word invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning August of 2020. We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated excellence and proficiency in undergraduate teaching and research in the area of physiology, anatomy or a closely related fields. The successful candidate will be expected to participate and contribute to departmental curriculum, mentor undergraduate students of the major and demonstrate a desire to actively collaborate with students and faculty within the department, from other disciplines and the University's health professional schools to support the mission of the University of the Incarnate Word.


This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Essential Functions
Duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. Full-time faculty at UIW teach a 4 + 4 teaching load and are flexible with course assignments which are based on student and departmental needs.
Primary teaching responsibilities include:
-Teaching human anatomy and physiology courses for an audience of biology majors, pre-health professions majors and non-majors, with the opportunity to develop courses in the candidates area of expertise
-Other responsibilities involve developmental advising of undergraduate students in the major and participation in, or direction of, high impact practices which can include but not exclusive to undergraduate research and field experiences compatible with available resources and faculty, service-learning and community-based projects;
-Perform regular scholarly research and publication, pursue internal and external funding to support their research endeavors and provide service to the department, school, university, and profession;
-Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission

-Possess excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills;
-Strong commitment to collaborative and cooperative instruction, advising, and mentoring a diverse population of underserved students including but not exclusive to first generation to college, military veterans, non-traditional, racially and ethnically diverse students;
-Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching;
-Competence in the employment of instructional technology;
-Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
-Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education
-Ph.D. degree in Physiology or closely related biological discipline at the time of appointment is required;

Required Work Experience
-Teaching experience in the field at the university level;
-Strong background in physiology and/or any closely related biology discipline;
-Demonstrate an active research program and the highest standards of excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications
-Undergraduate teaching in human physiology and anatomy, comparative physiology, vertebrate zoology and or other related biological fields;
-One (1) year or more of teaching at the undergraduate level and post-doctoral experience in anatomy, physiology and/or field biology in a closely related field
